Step 1 - Research your inventor and his/her invention

The first part of the contest requires you to present a research report on your inventor so Mrs. Osborn can decide if this person is worthy of being the topic of her new book. Use the resources available in the library and online to find out facts about your inventor. You may want to use a research guide to organize your notes as you research. You may use the one provided below or create your own.

Step 2 - Write your report about your inventor and their invention

Once you have gathered your facts, write your report about your inventor. Give enough information that Mrs. Osborn can make a well-informed decision. Be sure you include how the effects of that invention may be helpful, harmful, or both.

Step 3 - Create a story map of your suggested book idea

Now that you have your facts, it's time to get to the creative part of the contest! Using the story map form, outline the plot of the story you would like to Mary Pope Osborne write about your inventor. Be sure to be think about the setting (time and place), the characters you will include, the problem of the story, the main events, and how you will solve the problem. Use your imagination and utilze the facts you learned to create your story map. You get get some writing tips from the Magic Tree House Readers and Writers Club.
