                                                                 Buchanan Elementary School

    What is the NWEA test?

NWEA is a computerized test that measures your student’s skill level in Reading and Math. All students in our school, Kindergarten through 3rd grade, take the NWEA test in Reading and Math.

    When are NWEA tests given?

All students at Buchanan Elementary School are tested at the beginning (usually Sept.), Middle (Dec/Jan) and End (usually May) of each school year.

    Are all tests the same?

No, NWEA tests are designed to target each individual student’s academic performance. The computer adjusts the difficulty of the questions based on how well the student answers the previous questions. Therefore, every student takes a unique test.

Students in Kindergarten and First Grade take the NWEA for Primary grades which uses an audio recording to guide younger students through the assessment. Second and Third Grade students take a test without audio recordings.

What does my student’s score mean?

RIT (Rasch unIT) is the scale used to measure your student’s progress. It is an equal interval scale used to chart academic growth. The following chart will help you understand the RIT score for your child based on National grade level scores for each subject at different times of the school year.
