John Earl Chase has been named the second inductee into the Branson Public Schools Pirate Wall of Honor, recognizing more than four decades of service to Branson students as a coach, teacher and educational leader.

The Chase family, former players, community members and friends gathered Friday, August 28, for a reception and induction ceremony prior to the Branson Pirates’ season home opener football game. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Nate Moore and Branson High School Activities Director Dr. Brandon Wilson joined members of the Chase family on the 50-yard line to honor Chase’s legacy.

Chase began his career at Branson High School in 1939, establishing the school’s first football program. After serving as a U.S. Army captain during World War II, he returned to Branson in 1950 as head basketball, track and baseball coach. In eight seasons, he led the Pirates to a 248-48 record, four state tournament appearances and state championships in 1954 and 1958. Known as a gentleman coach, Chase later served as superintendent until his retirement in 1980. He was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 1998, and his legacy continues through the former stadium named in his honor and a scholarship established in his name.

“John Earl Chase represents the very best of what it means to be a Branson Pirate,” said Superintendent Dr. Nate Moore. “His legacy was built not only on championships and accomplishments, but on the character he demonstrated, the students he invested in and the community he helped shape.”

The Pirate Wall of Honor, displayed year-round in Pirate Stadium, recognizes coaches, teams and individuals who have left a lasting legacy on Branson Public Schools. Coach Steve Hancock was named the inaugural inductee in 2023.

The plaque honoring Chase was dedicated August 28, 2026, as a permanent tribute to his extraordinary service and enduring impact on generations of Pirates.
